It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of the D.C. music scene. Some of my favorite artists come from this town. Possibly D.C.'s best kept secret (until now) is Vic Chesnutt. I was first introduced to Chesnutt with my children through Pancake Mountain (which is sheer juvenile genius). But Chesnutt's most recent release, At The Cut is amazing. Partnered with Guy Picciotto of Fugazi and members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Chesnutt offers a beautiful, dark folk-tinged masterpiece. Although the song I've included, "Philip Guston" is great, by far the most harrowing and moving cut on the album is "Coward"–which you can hear a portion of in his interview, along with Guy, on NPR.
